Crane grillage and platform
Apexis Engineering provided a design review on the concept that was created by an engineering company working within the nuclear sector.
The crane grillage was a large safety critical component, and nothing could be left to chance; the grillage is the base of a crane. This crane was installed at the Hinckley Point to help with building the nuclear plant.
The specification was clear, with a 1500 kN vertical load and a 6,000kNm overturning moment for the crane however there were areas that needed further clarity which our engineering team provided with recommendations that exceeded the clients’ specifications and expectations.
Lindhurst Engineering required careful and detailed analysis of all aspects of the structure, so they had clear manufacturing details for the grillage. This was a tightly managed project however the end client presented last minute changes which needed careful consideration without having to complete a large portion of design reworking to accommodate them.
With good communications, a well managed project plan alongside our engineering expertise Lindhurst Engineering received a better design at a cost that meet the budgets from their client.
One point to make is look how big the base of this crane is by zooming in on the door in the bottom left corner of the photograph. It’s impressive!
Project outcomes:
- Detailed manufacturing drawings
- FEA simulation and reports
- Project recommendations whilst keeping on track and avoidance of missing milestones for this civil engineering project
- Grillage fit for purpose
