Apexis Engineering are experts in the detailed design of rolling roads or chassis dynamometers having undertaken a number of projects. However, within some industries, especially the automotive manufacturing sector, something bespoke is needed or something that’s not been done before.

For this case study we’ll focus on the 8 automotive industry projects Apexis Engineering has completed, and a large-scale value engineering project completed for an OEM.

These 8 projects have included the design of bespoke rolling roads of chassis dynamometers for challenging size options or footprints, bespoke wheelbase ranges or new to market manufacturers. The work we’ve undertaken has included providing concepts to be used as a sales tool through to the detailed design for commissioned dynos for a range of vehicles from motorcycles to ride on tractor units, cars to buses and HGVs. Our team are involved in all aspects from the motors to use to the design of bed frames, to optimising pit sizes, formulating installation methods, the best floor structure and plate arrangements and the calibration systems. Essentially Apexis Engineering provide the mechanical operation of these systems, and our expertise lies in designing a bespoke dynamometer that meets the requirements.

Restraint System

Projects have included reverse engineering of existing equipment to enable the retrofitting, move, refurbishment or modification of existing dynos. For one complex rolling road there were 4 different floor plate holes in the 90 plates that were in-situ. This 1960s bit of kit had hand drawings which gave a good starting point minus the modifications to the floor plates detailed above. Our expert was able to create a full manufacturing pack, and a 3D design that could be used by the engineers on site and ensured that all the challenges were overcome for the lowest cost whilst retaining integrity and providing longevity.

Apexis Engineering provided value engineering services to an OEM who had a range of dynamometers for the automotive industry that needed to be easier to assemble, have parts standardised, costs of materials reduced and be simpler to install when on site. Our team worked on their product range to save significant time and money for the OEM with one dynamometer structure having the cost and lead time halved plus reduced the complexity of assembly for their engineers.
