WetMate
With offshore wind farm installations getting deeper and deeper it poses challenges for the inspection and maintenance of cables. It was an engineering priority within the industry for the development of ROV-installable wet-mate connectors as an alternative to dry-mated cable. This 33kV hybrid wet-mate connector for offshore wind farms was needed to eradicate the need to raise cables to the surface from the seabed to connect and reconnect them.
Apexis Engineering were appointed to review the concept that the industrial team had come up with; we created a more detailed design and validation that the expanded concept would work. We created prototype drawings for the ‘plug’ which was the right size for what was required and included the right features.
The WetMate you see in the image was based on the Apexis Engineering design and is in use today with a much installation time and maintenance costs than was expected and certainly compared to the previous way of working.
The solution we created means that when installed the WetMate is precision remote monitored which reduces routine maintenance and intervention by divers which has further contributed to better health, safety and affordability.
