Case study: Granulate Plant
We sign a NDAs so we can’t always tell you in full about our projects however there are some we can.
The Challenge
A large roof tile manufacturer had an issue with their granulate recovery system whereby it was difficult to maintain screw conveyors and bucket elevators. Another major issue was the amount of waste that was produced with each production run using the existing system. The maintenance team were undertaking tasks in an unsafe environment which meant no preventative maintenance tasks were being undertaken. The reclamation rates for the granulate were really poor. A new system needed to be designed and manufactured to make a safer and more reliable system.
Our Process
A concept was developed by Apexis Engineering which was a simple lean-phase pneumatic conveying system. Once the concept was approved the next stage was to complete the manufacturing pack which included a detailed bill of materials and assembly pack. The final stage was to complete the manufacturing and installation of the granulate recovery system.
The output / result
The new plant provides safe access for maintenance work, the new equipment has virtually no moving parts so is very reliable and easy to maintain. Any spillage from the screw conveyor and bucket elevators has been eliminated. The expensive raw material is fed into the system in a much more controlled way which means it is better utilised and there is less waste with reclamation rates being almost 100%. The new system has totally eliminated cross-contamination at changeover and when changeover of colour is required it is an automatic process which has removed the need for an operator to dig out within the system which was a high-risk activity identified during the project briefing.
