After the 2024 August bank holiday it was our official first day of working properly here at Unit 5.

It was a space that allowed us to be the turnkey engineering company that we wanted to transition the business to when Craig and Seleena bought the majority shareholding from the founder.

Craig developed a business plan in 2017/18 which expanded the mechanical design service that was our core offering as a business. 

Relocating to Derby was a no brainer with both owners living in the area however it also provided a significant advantage for the business. Derby has long been recognised as one of the UK’s leading engineering and manufacturing places, with a rich heritage that spans aerospace, rail, automotive, food and drink manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, and power generation. The city is home to well known organisations such as Rolls-Royce, Alstom, Toyota, and a wide network of specialist suppliers. The region offers access to a highly skilled workforce, established supply chains, and a strong culture of technical innovation. Derbyshire was a critical part of Britain’s Industrial Revolution and in 1717 Derby was chosen as the site for the first water-powered silk mill in the country.

Being based in Derby allows Apexis Engineering to draw upon this wealth of engineering expertise while remaining close to key suppliers and industry partners. The city’s reputation for precision engineering and technological excellence aligns perfectly with Apexis Engineering’s commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable engineering solutions, which made Derby an ideal base for us.

When we viewed Unit 5 it was still a work in progress with renovations however it fit with our vision to have a design office and workshops. In fact we have three workshop areas and a large design office upstairs; this space enables us to manage multiple projects at any one time.

Since being based at Unit 5 we were able to deliver a set of bespoke machines to Ibstock for their Atlas plant to provide very specific requirements on their brick production lines.  These machines enabled the brick makers to meet the exact quality requirements for a range manufactured at the factory. 

We’ve also worked with an OEM to get their machinery digitalised with detailed drawings and a manufacturing pack, which they did not have, alongside completing a value engineering exercise to bring down assembly time and reduce parts. All whilst offering assembly services to extend their capacity which was critical for their business success. We truly have become this OEMs partners.

Providing manufacturing brokerage services to Weiss Technik has been another project we can openly talk about; whenever they need engineering support with parts that are niche or specialist they turn to us so we can find them the best quality parts when required.

We fast tracked our business plan when we found our industrial unit in Derby in 2024 and we’re on a strong path to success offering our turnkey engineering services, assembly service to OEMs and manufacturing brokerage to customers.

So today is about celebrating success and doing that with cake!
