Celebrating anniversaries…

Two years at Derby based Industrial Unit

Over the last few weeks we’ve celebrated two milestones; Craig has been with the business for 14 years doing what he does best AND we’ve called Unit 5 (our industrial unit) home for 2 years.

New build in progress

Bespoke machinery in workshop

We love the start of a project in the workshop.

In August a new build of three bespoke machines (well test rigs) began; we’re adhering to a tight deadline to manufacture, assembly and test these rigs to ensure they do what they’ve been designed to do against a very exacting industry ISO standard.

Nothing beats the feeling of everything moving components from the very well organised storage racks to the machinery being built in the workshop according to the general assembly drawings printed out and on the table.

From CAD to IRL (in real life)

One thing we’ve got nailed is ensuring that what happens in CAD is good when it’s brought into real life (i.e. manufactured). So, for an urgent project a client needed we put Emily (our summer intern) onto the task making sure the ‘it has to be good when it’s made and not just look amazing on CAD’ was reiterated.

What a job Emily did; great angles, easy to use part, nicely made and perfect when our client put it into use within their product (which we can’t talk about in full yet!). 

Pure Physics

Osmotic Power Plant Oslo

Have you heard about Osmotic Power Plants? It’s interesting to read the science and engineering behind generating energy with zero emissions from saltwater.

It’s described as the next generation renewable energy source that is not remotely affected by weather or time. Impressively there’s no carbon dioxide emissions as the name suggests these plants (one in Denmark and one in Japan) harness the same scientific principles as osmosis. 

At Fukuoka in Japan, they extract seawater and also use treated water from a sewage plant. The membrane passes water through but blocks impurities and as the treated water moves across to the salty side pressure builds which in turn spins the turbine to drive the generator to produce electricity. Interesting stuff, and anything that relies on physics is great from our engineering perspective.

Providing UKCA / CE Certification

UKCA and CE marking training

It’s important to us that, if needed, we can provide the UKCA and/or CE certifications that the bespoke machinery we design, manufacture and supply.

Intensive training on this subject is something we commit to complete as required; this year we’ve done the training we need to be competent to provide the Certificate of Conformance and markings that are required for any machinery that we design and supply to our customers.
